Elected to State Parliament on 11 October 1997, Michael is married with two daughters and his personal interests include current affairs, reading, public speaking, recreation, sport and racing, cooking, gardening and photography.

In 1977, Michael graduated with a Diploma of Teaching from the SA College of Advanced Education, and in 1978 he graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree, majoring in Physical Education and Economics.

Michael taught both economics and physical education at Kadina Memorial High School from 1979 – 1985.

Michael also is Member for Lee.

Appointed Minister in March 2002.  His portfolio responsibilities are Police, Emergency Services and Recreation, Sport and Racing.
